Marc Provisor is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersections of trauma, resilience, and the human condition through abstract expressionism and symbolism. He has a unique background, combining his experience in counter-terrorism with his passion for art. His compelling body of work is deeply intertwined with his experiences in military service and counter-terrorism. Born in Philadelphia in 1962, he immigrated to Israel in 1978 and served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces from 1981 to 1984.
It was during this time, amidst the turmoil of the Lebanese War, that Provisor began painting as a means to process the traumas of combat. A friend gifted him a watercolor set, and he found solace in translating his experiences onto paper, stating, “I basically sat down with this watercolor sheet and I started painting what I went through in the evenings and I felt good” .
After his military service, Provisor pursued formal art education at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and studied under artist Marc Klionsky. He gained early success in the art world, exhibiting in various galleries. However, in 1991, he returned to Israel and re-engaged with security work, eventually becoming the Security Chief of the Shilo region, and then a Consultant in the field of Terror Prevention. focusing on protecting communities in high-risk areas .
Despite the demands of his security career, Provisor never abandoned art. His paintings are a fusion of serene landscapes, figurative works and the stark realities of conflict. He describes his work as exploring “Beauty and Chaos,” often painting multiple pieces simultaneously, each reflecting different realms of his experiences . His bold brushwork and evocative use of space reflect an ongoing dialogue between chaos and control, destruction and healing. His landscapes are imbued with deep emotion and intense colors, balancing moments of tension with sensual magnetism and graceful reflection .
Working primarily in oils, mixed media, and found materials, Provisor’s pieces are layered with emotion and raw energy, inviting viewers to engage with both the seen and the unseen.
Provisor’s art has been showcased in numerous exhibitions and collections worldwide. His work not only offers a window into his personal journey, but as testament to his belief in the power of art not only as expression, but also to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
